PROSPECTIVE, RANDOMIZED, CROSSOVER COMPARISON OF SUBLINGUAL APOMORPHINE (3 mg) WITH ORAL SILDENAFIL (50 mg) FOR MALE ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

2004

Abstract: Purpose: We established the efficacy and safety of sublingual apomorphine compared with oral sildenafil. in comparable groups of patients with erectile dysfunction (ED). Materials and Methods: This prospective, randomized, crossover study included 77 heterosexual men with ED of various etiologies and severities. A total of 62 men were randomized but only 34 were evaluable for efficacy and tolerability. The study started with a run-in period of 2 to 4 weeks. The first 4 weeks of treatment were followed by a washout period of 4 weeks, after which patients changed to the alternate treatment for an additional 4-week period. The sequence of the 2 treatments was established by a randomi…

Prevalence of erectile dysfunction in male survivors of cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies.

2021

BackgroundPrevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in male survivors of cancer across cancer types has not been systematically analysed.AimTo estimate the prevalence of ED in all types of cancer and identify characteristics associated with ED in survivors of cancer.Design and settingSystematic review and meta-analysis (MA) of cross-sectional studies.MethodMEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and EMBASE were searched, targeting reports published from inception to 1 February 2020. All retrospective or prospective studies reporting prevalence of ED in male patients with cancer and using a validated tool for detection of ED were included. A random-effects MA model was used to pool prevalence of ED as abso…

Sexual Dysfunctions and Their Association with the Dual Control Model of Sexual Response in Men and Women with High-Functioning Autism

2019

Adults with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, repetitive and stereotyped interests and behaviours as well as hyper- and/or hyposensitivities. These disorder specific symptoms could be associated with the development of sexual disorders. The Dual Control Model of Sexual Response presents one approach that is frequently used to explain the emergence of sexual dysfunctions. The aim of the present study was to assess the extent of symptoms of sexual dysfunctions in men and women with ASD and to evaluate their association with the individual propensity of sexual excitation and inhibition as defined by the Dual Control Mode…

Associations between body mass index, waist circumference and erectile dysfunction: a systematic review and META-analysis

2020

Growing evidence reports that obesity might play a role in erectile dysfunction (ED), but limited knowledge is available. We conducted a meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of ED in overweight men and men with obesity. We performed a systematic review up to 01/04/2019 to investigate the associations between obesity and ED. Applying a random-effect model, we calculated the prevalence of ED, the odds ratio (OR) for the presence of ED by Body Mass Index (BMI) categories and the mean differences between ED and controls in BMI and Waist Circumference (WC). Among 3409 studies, we included 45 articles with 42,489 men (mean age = 55 years). Taking normal weight men as reference, the prevalence…

Ejaculation Disorders in Male Patients with Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Prevalence

2021

PURPOSE: Ejaculatory dysfunction (EjD) and erectile dysfunction after cancer treatment are clinically important complications, but their exact prevalence by various kinds of cancer site and type of treatment is unknown. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the available evidence and provide pooled estimates for prevalence of EjD and erectile dysfunction in relation to all cancer sites and identify characteristics associated with EjD in cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional and case-control studies. We searched 4 electronic databases (Medline®, CINAHL, PsychInfo and Embase®) until July 22, 2…

The relationship between endothlial ABD erectile dysfunction, levels of testosterone and cardiovascular events in the follow-up

2016

Background: Clinical and experimental evidence suggest that testosterone levels play a role in cardiac and vascular pathology. A long history of observational studies investigating serum testosterone level and cardiovascular risks, specifically mortality, reveals important associations between low testosterone and mortality, while higher serum testosterone level appear to be predictive in the majority of studies. On the other hand, it is well documented and accepted that endothelial dysfunction is expression of preclinical atherosclerosis and it is associated with an increased amount of CV events in the follow-up. Erectile dysfunction is also an early manifestation of arteriosclerosis assoc…

Ageing and sexuality

2016

Abstract Sexuality is a dimension that concerns human health with profound implications not only in the biological and psychological aspects, but also in the social and cultural dimensions, affecting all ages of life. Sexuality in old age is still conditioned by biases, prejudices and from a stereotyped vision, which considered older people as “asexual”, in spite of several studies and surveys showing that older persons have sexual potential to express. In population surveys, a fair number of men and women aged over 60 years reported having sex at least once a month. The most influential predictor of sexual activity seems to be the physical health in older men, and the quality of the relati…

Evaluation of an alternative dosing regimenwith tadalafil, three times per week, for men with erectile dysfunction: SURE study in Italy.

2007

AIM: To examine the preference for two dosing regimens of 20 mg of tadalafil, on demand or three times per week, in men affected with erectile dysfunction (ED) in Italy. METHODS: Scheduled Use versus on demand Regimen Evaluation (SURE) is a multicenter, crossover and open-label study, involving 94 urology centers in Italy. Patients aged 18 years or older affected with ED for at least 3 months were enrolled and randomized to 20 mg of tadalafil treatment on demand or three times per week for 5-6 weeks. After a 1-week washout, patients were crossed over to the alternate regimen for 5-6 weeks. A treatment preference question was used to determine the preferred treatment regimen. International I…

Role of abdominal obesity for functional outcomes and complications in men treated with radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer: results of the Mul…

2014

Objective. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of abdominal obesity on preoperative features, complications and functional outcomes of men treated with radical prostatectomy (RP) for prostate cancer. Material and methods. In 2006 a multicentre Italian report on RP evaluated the surgical and functional characteristics of prostate cancer and RP outcomes. Age and waist circumference (WC) were recorded. Abdominal obesity was defined as a WC of at least 102 cm. International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score, prostate-specific antigen, prostate volume, tumour characteristics, presence/absence of perioperative complications and the number of blood units transfused were recorded. Preoper…

Posizionamento di protesi peniena malleabile. Risoluzione di complicanza intraoperatoria.

2009

ABSTRACT. We report a technique for the solution of an intraoperative complication occurred during penile prosthetic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A 70-year-old patient underwent open radical retropubic prostatectomy in 2004 due to a prostate cancer - Gleason 6 (3+3) pT2N0M0. The erectile dysfunction subsequently observed was not responsive to oral or intracavernosal drug administration, so a malleable penile implant surgery was recommended. RESULTS. During the positioning of the left penile cylinder, a septum perforation (cross-over) occurred. Instead of interrupting and postpone surgery in order to allow the septum to recover, we decided to proceed utilizing our technique for a safe pos…
